Black Diamond Sabretooth Crampons Review
February 6th, 2008The Black Diamond Sabretooth Crampons are an excellent crampon choice for winter climbing and hiking.
I recently used the Sabretooth Clip on a hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire to climb Mount Lafayette. (elevation 5,260 ft.) The Sabretooth Clip uses a strap across the forefoot and a bail (similar to an alpine binding) to secure against the heel. The strap arrangement is simple, easy, and doesn’t slip. At a little over a pound each, I felt the crampons were similar to my snowshoes and didn’t weigh my feet down. They worked great in snow, ice, and a combination with rock surfaces. With twelve points, the front two points are angled more horizontal than other crampons, making toe gripping easier and tripping over a point less likely. ![]()
There’s also a Pro model of the Sabretooth, which is a step-in system intended for boots with a front welt. Black Diamond has an excellent reputation for quality climbing products, including climbing gear, skis, and poles. BD offers a 1 year warranty, but, from experience, is more generous when replacing gear which has failed.
In short, an excellent crampon for all conditions.
