Doing Skiing Tip
April 3rd, 2008Here’s a balance tip, from a doing approach:
Doing: “Balance more on the outside leg than the inside leg”
Stand on a hard surface (kitchen floor) in bare feet. Now stand on one leg and pay attention to how you adjusted to make that move. You probably flexed your knee and ankle, such that your torso lowered slightly toward the floor. Your support leg is now slightly shorter than it was when you were standing on both legs. It was that flexing which resulted in a “soft” support leg.
For fun, now quickly stiffen your support leg. Wobbled, right? A stiff leg has no flexing and therefore not much ability to balance.
For folks who better better by doing, try using flexing of the outside leg to balance more on that leg, than the inside leg. With a soft outside leg, your weight will be drawn to the outside of a turn, where it will give you balance and control.
