Moguls 102; Basic Line

July 13th, 2006

The next step in developing basic mogul skills is to identify the most effective path through a mogul field. The most effective path is typically called the Basic Line.
THE BASIC LINE IS TO GO AROUND EACH BUMP.

The basic line is dictated by the fact that bumps are formed by skiers turning in the same location over and over again. Develop the ability to read that pattern and follow it by identifying that a bump has a base (which extends outward from the slope), a crest (the top), two shoulders (left and right), and a backside (which extends downhill to the slope). As you initiate a turn, drive your skis diagonally across the bump’s base and make the round part of the turn on its shoulder. End the turn on the backside, aiming your feet at the base of the next bump. Focus on traveling to the “outside half” of each bump, avoiding its crest. This basic line will provide you the room you need to link multiple turns in the bumps with control.
