Princeton TEC Quad Headlamp
January 10th, 2007Take the Snowskills.net headlamp test:
- Does your headlamp feel heavy?
- Does your headlamp have only one light setting?
- Does your headlamp shine less light than you could read a newspaper by?
- Does your headlamp leave you guessing as to how much power the batteries have left?
If the answer to any one of these questions is YES, then it’s time for a new headlamp, and we recommend the Princeton TEC Quad Headlamp.

The Princeton TEC Quad Headlamp is very light (3.5 ounces) and well balanced, yet feels secure on your head. It’s also waterproof, which is pretty much the first priority for any headlamp intended for winter use. There are four LED bulbs, with high, low, or a flashing mode, so you can adjust for the conditions. The off/on switch is large and in the center, so it’s easy to find and use with gloves on. One of the nicest features of the Quad is that it has a low battery indicator, which few headlamps offer and runs on 3 AAA batteries with an option for lithium batteries (saves 0.5 ounces, for those who count every ounce). Best of all, the high setting on the Quad is really bright and spreads plenty of light to hike, ski, or otherwise work with confidence.
I use the Quad for winter trekking, snowshoeing, nordic skiing, dog walking, and those ‘jump-start the car at night in cold temps and wind’ situations. And for the frugal New Englander in you, the Quad is priced between $30 and $35 at Campmor and can be found on sale at Basegear for around $25.
