Skiing Snowboarding Responsibility Code #7
January 22nd, 2007The 7th item in the Responsibility Code is: Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
Riding the lift is commonly one of the greatest fears of beginning skiers and riders. A few things to keep in mind that will make it easier to follow this Code item:
- It’s always okay to tell the lift attendant that you’re not comfortable or have never ridden this lift before. They’ll help you understand what you need to know and take special care to coach you.
- If your skills are still weak, it’s a good idea to pair up with a stronger skier or rider on the lift.
- If you find yourself in an ackward situation while loading or unloading, the attendant will surely slow or stop the lift foryou and that’s okay! Ski areas try to keep the lifts moving for all concerned, but the welfare of the loader/unloader is most important.
- Pay attention to the terrain accessed by the lift you’re about to load. Most lifts aren’t designed to be ridden downhill, so be sure to have a level of comfort for the terrain concerned before you go to a new lift.
- Under no circumstances should you ever jump from a lift; it could derail the cable and endanger others. In the unlikely event the lift breaks down, safety personnel will come and rescue you, so just sit tight and wait for help.
